How Do I Calculate Freight Class?

How do you calculate freight class? You do so by using four transportation factors. These factors are stowability, liability, ease of handling, and density. Our freight class calculator helps shippers easily find their freight class. This is based on standard shipment details.

Calculate Freight Class

The calculations are for shipments that are transported by LTL freight shipping. Not all items are found by their freight class. These items are identified as NOI, or Not Otherwise Indicated. When identified as NOI, the shipment becomes a density based shipment. FreightCenter is here to assist. Here at FreightCenter, we can help you calculate freight class or density. Whether your specific item is identified by freight class or density.

Density Based

You use density shipping for shipments of objects that vary in size as well as when the number of items shipped varies between locations. Some examples of density items are wooden tables and clothing. You use density based shipping for wooden tables due to how they vary in size. Clothing may seem similar due to their vast variety of sizes. However, it is actually due to how the shipper could be transporting as much as 500 pounds or as little as 20 pounds. Determining whether or not your item would be a part of these types of shipments isn’t very hard. However, FreightCenter is happy to assist with any questions or concerns.

Freight Classes

Your shipment’s freight class is a major factor in determining the cost of your freight shipment. 18 freight classes exist and range from numbers 50 to 500. The lower the number, the lower the cost. In addition to our freight class calculator, we have a freight class lookup tool. Feel free to use either of those in your search. We here at Freight Center are happy to assist in your search, along with all assistance needed with your shipment.

How Stowability Calculates in Freight Class

Stowability is the first and main calculation of all shipping companies. Calculations are taken into account whether or not your item can transport amongst other commodities. Items that can combust, are hazardous, or perishable, cannot ship amongst certain materials. We recommend keeping your shipment within a crate or box. This would then make your shipment an easier thing to stack and pack within a cargo container or truck.

How Liability Calculates in Freight Class

Calculating the value of your item is discovering its liability. Shipping companies refer to the liability as to the likelihood of theft and or damage attempts to their vehicle. Liability is very important to them, especially for shipments that involve long drives. Possessing an item with a greater risk results in a higher freight class. We here at FreightCenter are happy to assist in discovering your item’s liability.

How Ease of Handling Calculates in Freight Class

Level of care is an additional necessity in calculating your freight class. If your item is fragile, it needs special attention. In addition, hazardous properties need them as well. Both would fit into a higher class and increase the shipping cost. As you can see, the type of item shipped is the main calculation. You just happen to have to calculate in numerous ways. We here at FreightCenter are happy to assist in calculating your shipment’s freight class.

How Density Calculates in Freight Class

Your item receives a lower freight class when it is a high-density (heavy and compact) item. These are less susceptible to damage. Shippers give low-density items a higher freight class when they are more susceptible to damage. Density is how much the item weighs in relation to its size. Shippers measure by cubic feet. While the measurement determines the amount of space needed for the item. Your item has a lower class, when compact, and is cheaper to ship than bulkier items.
