Size and Weight
The size or dimensions and weight of a shipment are two of the most important factors that determine the cost of an LTL freight quote. It’s important to remember that the packaging should be included when accounting for the total weight as well as the dimensions. Also, note that some freight carriers go according to density weight. Think of this for example: 100 pounds of feather and 100 pounds of rocks may weigh the same but do they take up the same amount of room? No, the 100 pounds of feathers will take up dramatically more space than the rocks. This means that going according to just weight alone may not be entirely accurate for some carriers as they want to compare the weight against the dimensions to determine density. By using FreightCenter's density calculator you can get an estimate as to what your freight's density might be. Also, it's important to always be upfront about the weight. The only person whose going to pay if you choose to low ball the weight is you. A carrier will weight the freight when they arrive at the pick up location and if they see it weighs significantly more than what you once claimed, you will get hit with a re-bill which will cost you way more than if you had just been upfront in the beginning.
The freight industry classifies commodities by type, known as freight class. Freight classes are determined by the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) and are based on stowability, size and weight, and commodity type. When you select the option for "I Don't Know" on the FreightCenter quote form, it defaults to a low class and often it is lower than the correct class for your item. This means that when the agent reviews your quote for accuracy, they will correct the freight class and you may see the price jump. This is because you didn't originally know what the correct freight class was to enter.
A lane is determined by the pickup and delivery locations. There is typically a fuel surcharge associated with each lane that changes weekly according to fuel costs. A lane from New Jersey to Washington D.C. might cost less than a lane from rural Oklahoma to Kentucky. It really depends on the availability of resources. If a lane is notoriously difficult and known for bad roads and inaccessibility, it will very likely cost more to get your freight through that lane than if you had sent it through a popular and accessible one.
Accessorial services are additional services that go beyond normal pickup and delivery. These can include services such as liftgate delivery, call-ahead notification, inside delivery, packing or unpacking, and residential deliveries. Typically these services are optional and cost more as they offer a service beyond what a truck driver is required to do. However, in the instance of lift gates, these are not always necessarily optional. If you have a 300 pound item and claim no lift gate, it's likely that it will be deemed necessary anyway and you will be billed. Keep in mind a trucker is not responsible for getting your freight on the truck and rather difficult to load onto a truck without the help of a lift gate.
