How to Package furniture for shipping

Packaging your freight correctly is crucial in ensuring it remains unharmed during its time in transit. Keep in mind that your precious rocking chair or grandfather clock will be in a trailer among heavy and bulky items such as an engine. It’s your duty and obligation to package your freight well enough so that nothing happens to it.

PRO TIP: Package or crate your freight and save some money! Transporting unpackaged furniture can be very costly. Box, crate, or palletize your freight shipment to save up to 50% or more on shipping costs compared to shipping your freight unpackaged. Need help packaging your furniture, office systems, or machinery? Talk to your FreightCenter Agent about professional packaging options at an additional cost.

  • Crate

A suitable option that can offer adequate protection for your most fragile items. Be sure to stuff the remaining space in the crate with material such as bunched-up newspaper to prevent your item from shifting during transit.

  • Pallet

Whether you have several stackable items or one large item, a pallet is another option for packaging your freight. The item(s)should not exceed the dimensions of the pallet or hang over the edge. If your item is fragile, first wrap it in several layers of bubble wrap. Afterward, shrink-wrap everything to the pallet and ensure it won’t move.

  • Box

A cardboard box does offer protection, though not much. If your item is not that fragile, this option is suitable. The box should be filled with packing peanuts to fill the space.

  • Barrel or Drums

This option is similar to a crate. The drum or barrel will protect your freight well; you need to make sure you fill the remaining empty space with a material so your item is not bouncing around during its travel.

How to Measure Furniture for Shipping

Furniture and office shipping is easier when it’s boxed and palleted. That way, it’s easier to measure and weigh. Measuring your freight correctly is an essential step that will prevent you from being faced with a billing adjustment. Any time your freight exceeds the weight or dimensions of what you initially listed, you will incur a fee during the weight being off. Billing adjustments from shipping furniture are very easy to avoid.

How to Avoid Billing Adjustments on Furniture Shipping

When measuring your freight, you will want to gather the following information: weight, length, width & height.

For Example…

50 pounds of rocks and 50 pounds of feathers both weigh 50 pounds – right? But 50 pounds of rocks take up much less space and are much denser than 50 pounds of feathers. The denser something is, the less likely it is to get damaged in transit. The less likely it is to get damaged during transit, the lower the freight class. The lower the freight class, the less expensive it is to ship. A rule of thumb is, Dense items are cheaper to ship. Less dense/more fragile items equal more costly to ship.

Tips and Tricks

  • Include all packaging materials in your final measurements. This includes the pallet, crate, bubble wrap, etc.

  • If your item is shaped oddly, gather measurements from the widest points of the item.

  • Some carriers go by density weight which is a different weight than what you read off a scale, consult with your agent to determine if this is the case.

What Is Density Weight When Shipping Furniture?

Freight density is the space an item takes up in relation to its physical weight. Weight density is determined by dividing the weight of the item in pounds by the volume in cubic feet. To find the total cubic feet, simply multiply the height x width x depth and divide that number by 1,728 (the number of cubic inches in a cubic foot 12x12x12). Density weight is more than just actual weight.

Money-Saving Tips for Shipping Furniture

Avoid Residential Locations

Because freight trucks are large and it’s hard for them to maneuver in tight spaces, there is a surcharge for drivers to pick up or drop off in residential locations. When possible, conduct your pickups and drops off at a commercial site or freight terminal to avoid paying extra.

Avoid Limited Access Locations

Just because a location is commercial doesn’t mean it’s not limited access. It could be a business in a desolate area, or a business in a crowded metro area, both of which have the potential to be limited access. Verify with your agent to confirm the location you’re shipping to and from is not limited access.

Avoid Using a Liftgate

The driver is not responsible for assisting you in any way with this step either. If it is determined that the usage of a liftgate is necessary for the pickup or drop off, the driver will use one, and you will get rebilled for it at a higher rate than if you had opted in for it at the time of booking.
