How to Save on Parcel Shipping

April 26, 2022 by FreightCenter

The term parcel, in most cases, means residential or small shipping in the freight industry. When looking to save on parcel shipping, there’s more than meets the eye! Learn how to save on parcel shipping today!

We get that double-checking before you ship a parcel does sound time-consuming. Time is money when it comes to your package. Sending a parcel alongside your less-than-truckload (LTL) cargo (and vice versa!) saves time and money on both ends.

What is Parcel Shipping?

Since parcel falls under various size requirements, it’s easy to assume that all things big and bulky are freight (everything over 100 lbs ). Consider parcels to be single-person movable boxes weighing under 100 pounds and should ship similar to freight. For parcel shipments, keep an eye on the dimension, weight, and overall density. Remeasure your shipment to see if it qualifies as a parcel. Be sure of the exact measurements and avoid missing any critical information.

Let’s make sure you have what you need. Keep in mind that some qualifications will differ according to the shipping company. Here is a quick reminder of the requirements to properly ship your parcel:

Parcel Proportions:

  • Single person movable package

  • Under 100 lbs.

  • 108 in. or less in length.

  • Less than 165 in. in both length and girth combined

To Calculate Girth:

  • Measure the width of the package, and multiply this number by two.

  • Measure the height of the package, and multiply this number by two.

  • Add these two numbers together. This is your girth.

  • Now, add your length + girth to see if the total is under 165 in.

Are You Ready to Save on Parcel Shipping?

If you believe the item falls within a high freight class category, the weight of the commodity is 150 lbs. and its dimensions are within range, choose parcel. While freight class is a non-issue for shipping parcels, your commodity will reap the benefits of the services—meaning your items will travel with more care. If it’s close to 150 lbs but has a lower freight class (or is more durable), stackable, and fits within the dimensions, choose LTL.

Am I Shipping Parcel or Freight?

When choosing between shipping parcel or freight, there are a few things to consider. Parcel shipping is typically used for smaller items that can be shipped via UPS, FedEx, or USPS. Parcels are sent nationally or internationally, and rates are based on the weight and dimensions of the package. Freight shipping is typically used for more oversized items that need to be shipped via truck, train, or plane. Freight rates are based on the size and weight of the shipment and the distance it needs to travel. If you’re unsure which option is suitable for your shipment, contact a shipping company for more information.

Shipping Hack

Looking for a cheap and convenient way to send a package? Parcel shipping involves sending packages through the mail with ease. Parcels can be sent through first-class mail, which is the most common and the least expensive. Also, this method can be sent via express mail or overnight. These systems of delivery are pricier but are much quicker. Parcel shipping is a convenient way to send packages, and it is typically less expensive than other types of shipping, such as FedEx, Amazon, or UPS. When sending a parcel, it is important to choose the right shipping option for your needs. If you need your package to arrive quickly, express mail or overnight delivery may be the best option. However, if you are on a budget, first-class mail may be the best option.

A Little Shipping With LTL

When shipping parcels, businesses have the option of using Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) shipping. LTL shipping is a type of trucking service that allows businesses to ship small loads of products at a lower cost than if they were to ship the product via full truckload. In most cases, LTL carriers will pick up shipments from multiple businesses and consolidate the loads onto one truck, which helps to keep costs down. For businesses that need to ship parcels regularly, LTL shipping can be a cost-effective solution. Shipping smarter can be the same difference between buying unused space on an 18-wheeled semi-truck or saving on classic package delivery – because it is.
