How Do You Prepare Light Bulbs for Ltl Shipping?
You save money with LTL (less-than-truckload) shipping because your shipment shares the truck with loads from other shippers. It’s important that your cargo be packaged so it will not be damaged in transit and will not present a danger to other shipments on the truck.
Remember that with LTL freight, your shipment will be put on or off trucks via forklift at least six times.
- At the point of pickup.
- Dropping off at the originating terminal.
- Put on the truck doing the hauling.
- Dropping off at the destination terminal.
- Put on the delivery truck.
- Dropping off at the final destination.
Because light bulbs can break so easily, it’s important to package them snugly, with plenty of resilient packaging to take the brunt of any incidental bump the cargo might receive in transit or on the forklift. Bulbs should be in their original cardboard packaging, whenever possible. If that’s not possible, wrap each bulb in bubble wrap or tissue paper.
Fill in spaces between the bulbs with paper packaging or bubble wrap to keep the bulbs immobile. Insulate the bottom and four sides with foam padding. Place another sheet of foam padding between the top of the bulbs and the double-sided shipping box. Seal the box with packing tape, wrap it with a blanket and strap it to a shipping pallet. If putting more than one box on the pallet, shrink wrap all the boxes together before banding them to the pallet.
