One of the most significant problems most encounter with eBay is calculating their shipping costs and putting them into the actual price of their product. This is because eBay shipping fees technically don’t exist. That said, sellers still have to pay shipping fees to the carrier they use to transport their goods. United States Postal Service (USPS) Shipping Requirements

The maximum size for a parcel is 108 inches in combined length and girth. USPS also offers Retail Ground; for this, pieces may measure up to 130 inches in combined length and girth; however, pieces over 108 inches will classify as overlength. No matter the size, the maximum mailable weight for a parcel through USPS is only 70 pounds.

United Parcel Service (UPS) Shipping Requirements

The maximum size is 165 inches in combined length and girth; the maximum weight permitted is 150 pounds.

Outliers

With anything, there are always outliers. Stuff that just doesn’t fit inside of the normal parameters of what’s accepted. Parcel shipping is no different. Many items are oddly shaped and don’t fit inside the 165-inch parameter put in place by UPS and FedEx. That is where freight shipping comes into play.

It’s Freight

If a package does not fall under the parcel guidelines, it can only mean one thing: freight. Freight is often moved from truck to truck, typically using forklifts, until it reaches its destination. It can and will likely be shipped through LTL carriers (less than truckload). Pricing for freight is a little different than pricing for parcels; not only is freight priced based on dimensional weight, but it is also classified by the NMFC (National Motor Freight Code).
