NMFC is The Standard for Freight Identification and Classification
The National Motor Freight Traffic Association, Inc. (NMFTA) is a nonprofit organization that controls NMFC Codes. The NMFTA is headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia. Most of the NMFTA’s members are part of the Freight Industry whether or not they are asset or non-asset-based. Most of the motor carrier carriers that are part of the organization operate as an interstate carrier or intrastate carriers. Annually the NMFTA publishes the National Motor Freight Classification guide which is the transportation industry standard that provides a comparison of commodities for pricing purposes.
Who Creates NMFC Numbers?
NMFTA creates NMFC numbers and also the Standard Carrier Alpha Code (SCAC Codes). A Scac code is a unique two-to-four-letter code used to identify transportation companies.
NMFC Codes Provide the Ability to Compare
The National Motor Freight Classification is a standard that provides a comparison of commodities moving in interstate, intrastate and foreign commerce. It is similar in concept to the groupings or grading systems that serve many other industries. Commodities are grouped into one of 18 classes—from a low of class 50 to a high of class 500—based on an evaluation of four transportation characteristics: density, handling, stowability, and liability. Together, these characteristics establish a commodity’s “transportability.”
