What Is a Handling Unit?
Every distinct piece of packaged freight that will be moved with a forklift, pallet jack or by hand is a handling unit. Every handling unit in a shipment should have at least two shipping labels (on adjoining sides) to make sure the forklift operators and drivers have a good view of where the shipment is going.
Handling Unit Examples
- Six boxes on one pallet is one handling unit.
- Six boxes on one pallet plus one palleted crate equals two handling units.
- A wrapped kayak is a handling unit
Every handling unit should be labeled if its contents are fragile, contain hazardous material or if the handling unit is not stackable.
