How to Ship a Mattress

How to Ship a Mattress

The reason so many mattresses end up behind the dumpster is because having a new mattress delivered is cheaper and easier than trying to wrestle with your old one. Their size, weight and shape always make them a hassle to move from point A to point B.  So, assuming that your mattress is actually worth moving rather than replacing, how exactly does someone ship a mattress? We’ve put together a step-by-step guide on how to ship a mattress the easiest and most affordable way.

Measurements and Weight

The first thing you need to do when shipping a mattress is know all the proper measurements and dimensions. Accuracy is key, so no guesstimating! The more accurate your shipment details are on your freight quote, the less chance of a billing adjustment post-shipment. So, measure and weigh your mattress after it’s been fully packaged to a tee to make sure you’re getting the most accurate pricing. As a reference, here’s a chart showing the most standard mattress sizes and weights:

Mattress SizeDimensionsWeight Range
Twin38” x 75”40 – 55 lbs.
Twin XL38” x 80”45 – 60 lbs.
Full54” x 75”50 – 75 lbs.
Queen60” x 80”60 – 110 lbs.
King76” x 80”85 – 125 lbs.
California King72” x 84”85 – 125 lbs.

Again, never estimate or guesstimate. Be accurate when filling out a freight quote. Carriers always inspect cargo and check the details of the shipments they handle to make sure they can operate at full capacity. If what the carrier reports during inspection differs from what you reported during the quote process, you will receive a billing adjustment after the shipment is completed.

Packaging

Packaging your freight is always one of the most important steps in the shipping process. Mattresses are an interesting piece of cargo to package because of their shape and size. In fact, they are so interesting that they come with their own special boxes for moving! And there’s also a separate mattress protector that goes around the mattress before it goes into the box for added protection. If you’re including a box spring in the shipment, wrap the box spring with some external packaging material, such as bubble wrap. If there is any empty space in the box your mattress and box spring is in, fill the space with internal packaging materials, such as packing peanuts or packaging foam.

Consider Insurance When Looking to Ship a Mattress

If you’re packaging up to move your mattress in the back of your own moving truck, you can disregard this part of the article. But if you’re using an LTL shipping carrier to transport mattresses, then this part is absolutely vital. Mistakes happen on the road and in transit, especially since LTL shipments share space in the back of a freight truck with other shipments. It’s important to know about freight insurance as well as the difference between carrier liability and freight insurance, so you know what coverage you need in the event of loss. Be sure you have the manufacturer’s mattress spec sheets for new mattresses, so you can provide that information to the insurance provider or carrier if it’s requested or required.
