Most businesses reach points in their evolution when they need to take advantage of opportunities or risk becoming irrelevant. Yellow Cab Transit Co. took advantage of the opportunity when the oil boom in the Oklahoma City area created a demand for cargo transportation. Yellow Transit Freight Lines emerged from this demand. They originally shipped goods for small manufacturers.
The freight division was eventually sold off, and the new owner kept right on evolving. Under its new name, Yellow Freight System was instrumental in consolidating small freight into tailored loads. This was the forerunner of today's LTL shipping.
Distribution centers were opened in the 1980s, all under the umbrella of The Yellow Corporation. The largest division in the company would be called Yellow Transportation Inc. Yellow Corporation purchased Roadway Corp in 2003. The company renamed itself Yellow Roadway Corporation. They later acquired USF Corp in 2005.
In 2012, Yellow Roadway Corporation began operating under its initials, YRC Freight.
