Like Airport Scanners, But Different
There’s a big difference between the 3D body scanners Human Solutions of North America sells and the ones the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) uses in airports. The TSA scanners use x-rays to see what’s inside and under your clothing. Instead of using x-rays (or any radiation), the Human Solutions of North America 3D Body Scanners use infrared lasers and cameras that take hundreds of measurements in seconds and convert them into a digital mesh, like a 3D avatar.
The scanners and accompanying software drive the company’s three main solutions:
- Extract measurements of the human body and create avatars based on those measurements.
- Simulate what fashion designs will look like on the avatars instead of relying on live models.
- Test ergonomic solutions. For example, when designing a new car interior, the designers can use avatars to simulate men, women, and children of different body types in the various seats and make sure they can comfortably reach the vehicle parts they need go. This way, they can see things like whether or not the center console is appropriately sized and situated without first having to build a model of the car.
More Like a Space Age 3D Body Scanner
Calling Human Solutions of North America’s 3D body scanner a “space age” might sound like hyperbole. Still, the truth is that FreightCenter handled shipping a Human Solutions of North America scanner to NASA in 2019. We didn’t get the lowdown on exactly how they’re using it. But here’s how other customers use the scanners.
The military uses them a lot, and for good reason. In all previous centuries, a new soldier would be hand measured for their uniform and then try on one or more until the fit was good. It’s a very time-consuming process, especially when there are numerous recruits reporting for duty at the same time. Today, in 10 seconds the 3D body scanner can extract hundreds of measurements that can be correlated to military sizing charts instantly. The recruit walks out with a duffle bag full of uniforms that match their measurements and body type.
The fashion industry is getting on the bandwagon, too, as colossal fashion and sports companies. Nike and Adidas are both customers of Human Solutions in North America. Additionally, university fashion departments use them for teaching and R&D.
Someday soon, thanks to Human Solutions of North America, we all might be able to walk into a clothing store, have a scan done and then be shown all the types of items that will actually fit. Can anyone say, “shoes that fit?”
From Germany to North Carolina and Beyond
Human Solutions is headquartered in Kaiserslautern, Germany, and has a satellite office in Morrisville, North Carolina. The North American office in Morrisville competes with HQ for leadership in sales and revenue.
Shipping Challenges
The number one shipping challenge is getting the goods to the customer.
When fully assembled, the scanners have a footprint of seven feet by seven and a ceiling height of 10 feet. For shipping, the 10-foot long, four-foot tall, and three-foot wide shipping crate contains four large columns, computer accessories, and miscellaneous items. The shipping weight is approximately 1,000 pounds. At this size and weight, the 3D body scanners can be awkward to unload, raising these questions:
- Does the customer have a loading dock?
- Can we get the crate from the truck onto the loading dock?
- If there is no loading dock, will the driver be able to unload the crate using the liftgate?
Delivery is successful in all but the most unusual circumstances, but it often takes a little bit of creativity and some direct communication with the carrier or customer. This is where FreightCenter steps in.
Once Human Solutions of North America chooses a carrier using the freightcenter.com quote system, FreightCenter’s National Account Manager checks to see whether the delivery location has an adequate loading dock or if some ingenuity will be needed.
Suppose an accessible loading dock is not available. In that case, the National Account Manager puts Human Solutions of North America into direct contact with the carrier’s local dispatcher to discuss how the delivery can take place. Human Solutions of North America has been shipping these scanners via FreightCenter since 2007, so they know all the tricks a driver can use to unload the crate safely and securely. On rare occasions, the National Account Manager has connected Human Solutions of North America directly with the driver. It’s not a standard operating procedure, but National Account Mangers do whatever is necessary to help get the job done.
One of the keys to being a successful shipper is building a long-term relationship with your freight broker, so they get to know you and your business and understand exactly what you need and how to help. That’s the way it’s worked for Human Solutions of North America and FreightCenter, going on 14 years.
