How Do You Prepare Batteries for LTL Freight Shipping?

LTL shipping is a smart choice for shipping automobile batteries because it is a cost-effective option. When shipping LTL, your shipment shares truck space with loads from other shippers, and you only pay for the space of which your shipment occupies. Therefore, you aren’t having to cover the cost of renting out the space of an entire truck.

That being said, because your shipment will be in the same truck with others, it is very important that your cargo is packaged carefully in order to reduce the risk for damage during transit. Furthermore, LTL freight trucks stop frequently and unload and reload shipments. Your battery needs to be packaged securely, and the packaging needs to be durable.

Packaging large batteries for shipping is not a difficult task. In fact, if you follow these tips below for some common battery types, it’s a relatively easy process.

Packing Non-Spillable Scrap Car Batteries

To start, place a piece of cardboard on top of a pallet, ensuring that the cardboard does not extend beyond its edges. Next, make a layer of batteries on the cardboard, standing the batteries upright. Make sure that the terminals from one battery do not touch the terminals of another. If there are side terminals, do not let the side terminals on two batteries face one another.

If the batteries are different sizes, place the taller batteries on the perimeter of the layer, securing the shorter batteries in the middle. After placing your first layer, if you need to add another, place a thick piece of honeycombed cardboard on top of the first row, then repeat the steps that you took in placing the first layer. You can have up to three layers in total.

When the batteries and cardboard are all in place, shrink wrap the entire package, starting at the bottom and working your way up until the shrink wrap overlaps the top layer of cardboard. Repeat three or four times until the entire package is sealed, protected and wrapped tight so that the batteries will not shift position during transit.

Packing Hybrid Car Batteries

The market for hybrid vehicle battery recycling and replacement is strong and growing. To meet the demand, some companies manufacture cases specifically designed for hybrid batteries, which are made to accommodate a forklift or pallet jack. To ship a hybrid battery, simply follow the packing instructions on the battery case.

Shipping Automobile Batteries FAQ

Q. Are there any special requirements for documentation when shipping automobile batteries via freight?

Yes, shipping automobile batteries requires specific documentation to comply with hazardous materials regulations. You will need to provide a proper Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) or Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for the batteries, along with other shipping documents required by the carrier and regulatory authorities.

Q. Can I ship different types of automobile batteries in the same freight shipment?

It’s generally best to avoid shipping different types of automobile batteries in the same shipment, especially if they contain different hazardous materials. Mixing batteries with varying chemistries can increase the risk during transit and may lead to non-compliance with shipping regulations.

Q. Are there any restrictions on shipping automobile batteries via freight?

Yes, there are restrictions on shipping automobile batteries due to their classification as hazardous materials. You must comply with the regulations set forth by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and other relevant authorities. Batteries containing certain hazardous materials like lithium-ion batteries may have more stringent restrictions.

Q. How are shipping costs for automobile batteries calculated in freight shipping?

Shipping costs for automobile batteries via freight depend on various factors, including the weight and dimensions of the shipment, the shipping distance, the shipping service selected, and any additional services required. To obtain an accurate quote, contact freight carriers or utilize online freight calculators.

Q. Can I track the shipment of automobile batteries during transit?

Yes, most freight carriers provide shipment tracking services. You can monitor the progress of your automobile battery shipment and get updates on estimated delivery times using the tracking number provided by the carrier.
